Whether you're considering solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl (LVP/LVT), or SPC, our Vancouver showroom has the perfect options to fit your needs.

This guide will help you understand the differences between these flooring types, laminate scratch resistance, AC ratings, waterproof ratings, strata underlay requirements, IIC & STC sound ratings, and the best flooring options for commercial applications.

1. Hardwood Flooring – Solid & Engineered

Hardwood flooring is a luxurious and long-lasting choice that increases property value. It is available in two main types:

  • Solid Hardwood: Made from 100% real wood, can be sanded and refinished multiple times.
  • Engineered Hardwood: A multi-layer structure with a real wood veneer on top of a plywood or HDF (high-density fiberboard) core, offering better moisture resistance.

Veneer Thickness in Engineered Hardwood

The top veneer layer determines how many times the floor can be refinished:

Veneer ThicknessRefinishing AbilityDurabilityBest Use
0.6mm – 2mmCannot be refinishedModerateLight residential, low-traffic areas
2mm – 3mmCan be lightly sanded onceHighHomes & light commercial spaces
3mm – 4mmCan be sanded 1-2 timesVery HighLuxury homes & offices
4mm – 6mmCan be refinished multiple timesExcellentLong-term investment properties

💡 The thicker the veneer, the longer your floor lasts!

Standard Sizes (Inches & mm):

  • 📏 Thickness:1/2" to 3/4" (12mm to 19mm)
  • 📏 Veneer Thickness (Engineered Hardwood):0.6mm to 6mm
  • 📏 Width:2-1/4" to 6" (57mm to 152mm, wide planks up to 10" available)
  • 📏 Length:12" to 84" (1 ft to 7 ft)

Best Uses:

Not ideal for wet areas (bathrooms, basements, humid environments)

Luxury homes & high-end commercial spaces

Boutique retail stores, executive offices, hotels

2. Laminate Flooring – Scratch-Resistant & Budget-Friendly

Laminate flooring is a cost-effective alternative to hardwood, made from HDF with a printed wood-look layer and a protective wear layer for enhanced durability.

Scratch Resistance in Laminate Flooring:

  • ✔ Laminate is highly scratch-resistant due to its aluminum oxide wear layer.
  • ✔ Ideal for homes with pets and high foot traffic.
  • AC4 and AC5-rated laminates are best for commercial use.

AC Rating (Abrasion Class) – Durability Guide:

AC RatingRecommended UseDurability Level
AC1Light residential (bedrooms, closets)Low
AC2Moderate residential (living rooms, dining areas)Medium
AC3Heavy residential / light commercial (kitchens, offices)High
AC4General commercial (boutiques, offices, cafés)Very High
AC5Heavy commercial (shopping malls, gyms, restaurants)Maximum

Waterproof Rating in Laminate Flooring:

Mostly water-resistant; some new lines are fully waterproof – Traditional laminate resists minor spills but standing water on the seams causes the fibreboard core to swell. Newer premium laminate lines now ship with a sealed HDF core and water-resistant edge treatments that are rated fully waterproof, suitable for kitchens, mudrooms and some bathroom applications. AC4 and AC5 wear-rated laminates remain the standard for high-traffic areas. Always confirm the specific product's waterproof rating and warranty before installing in a wet-prone room.

🔹 Water-resistant laminates (AC4 or AC5) have waxed edges but are still not fully waterproof like vinyl or SPC.

Best Uses:

Not much recommended for bathrooms

Budget-friendly home renovations

Light to moderate commercial spaces (AC4 & AC5 recommended)

3. Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) & Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) – Waterproof & Versatile

Luxury Vinyl Flooring is made from multiple layers of PVC, offering 100% waterproof protection with enhanced durability and comfort.
